On July 11th, Colleen Richardson, President of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE), expressed, "I think BTS had also performed in a wind band. Wind band is that much open to various arts."
President Richardson made these remarks during a conference at a restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, during the commemorative conference for the Gwangju D-1 Year of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference.
Although it was half jokingly expressed, mixture of genres, K-pop, such as BTS, is being embraced as a form of crossover even in Western wind arts.
President Richardson stated, "No one can resist liking wind bands or wind orchestras once they understand and experience them," adding, "Recently, there has been an increase in Western wind bands performing K-pop. Wind band is the forefront of various musical arts."
The dream stage for wind musicians around the world, the 'World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference,' will be held in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, for five days from July 16th to 20th next year. A wind orchestra is commonly referred to as a 'wind ensemble.' The World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference aims to explore various aspects of wind arts, including wind orchestras and wind bands.
During the visit to Gwangju in the form of a preliminary survey, President Richardson expressed satisfaction with the event preparation status in Gwangju, including Mayor Bang Se-hwan, and anticipated a successful hosting of the conference. The President showed a special interest in Gwangju's beautiful landscapes and wildflowers.
While expressing regret at the current decline of wind arts in Korea, which once flourished, President Richardson hoped that interest in wind arts would reignite through next year's World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference.
The World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) organizes biennial music festivals. The upcoming event is expected to attract approximately 20,000 visitors, including over 1,000 musicians, music-related organizations, and tourists from more than 50 countries worldwide, making it a massive-scale event. It will be held in Asia for the first time in twelve years and the first time in Korea.
President Richardson empathized with the Korean media referring to the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference as the 'Wind Band Olympics,' but confidently stated, "While the Olympics determine rankings through competition, our event is a celebration that encourages and congratulates," adding, "In that aspect, our event is even better than the Olympics."
Regarding the fact that artificial intelligence (AI) is surpassing the realm of wind arts, President Richardson affirmed, "AI or robots cannot replicate the unique experiences accumulated by wind orchestras or human participation." She assured her lifelong dedication to the perpetuity of art.
Lastly, President Richardson stated, "Wind bands are easily accessible to students as well, allowing for faster understanding. Through next year's World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference in Gwangju, I hope that more young people will have the opportunity to encounter wind bands and grow to love them."
President Richardson currently serves as a professor at Western University in Canada. The President works as a band coordinator and conducts wind ensembles at the university. She is dedicated to globalizing wind arts in North America, Asia, and Europe."
